Fashion retailer Jane Norman was set up in 1952 and is now owned by sisters Alison Goldberg and Sara Phillips. They retain a hands-on role in the business and have responded to an increasingly fashion-conscious market by aiming to offer designer looks at high street prices. The London-based company is currently undergoing a major expansion programme, planning to increase the number of stores from 22 to 70 in five years. It has also begun to expand from its south-east base, launching new stores in Birmingham and Glasgow. Jane Norman has seen its profits grow by 90% pa, from £534,000 in 1996 to £3.6m in 1999. Sales increased by 37% pa in the same period to £18.9m. The company declined to explain the reasons behind its profit growth.
