Joan Collins called into JCB’s Staffordshire headquarters last March to celebrate the production of the company’s half-millionth machine. The first was a farm trailer made in 1945 by the late Joseph Cyril Bamford. JCB now produces 130 different machines for agriculture and construction and has been run by Bamford’s son, Sir Anthony, since 1976. The company claims 7.5% of the world market in construction equipment. Its 2002 accounts, the latest available, report sales of £817m.
