Founded in 1945 by Joseph Cyril Bamford, who used a secondhand welding kit, this Staffordshire firm has since produced more than 1m machines. Its yellow construction equipment is recognised worldwide, and overseas sales accounted for four-fifths of its £2.5bn sales in 2014. It has seen a slowdown in markets such as Russia and Brazil, but strong sales in India, where it generates 25% of its revenues. Since 1975, the group has been run by the founder’s son, Lord Bamford, 70, who is chairman.
