No stranger to our league tables, Jobserve took first place in last year’s Profit Track 100, when it featured with profit margins of 88%. Founded in 1993 by Robbie Cowling and John Witney, Jobserve charges a fee to recruitment agencies to post their vacancies on its website. It began by specialising in IT positions but has since launched seven new sites advertising jobs in sectors from accounting to engineering and medicine. Companies can also post their own vacancies on its sites. Sales have grown 72% a year from £2.6m in 1997 to £13.1m in 2000, when 47 staff were employed. Jobserve is a barometer of the economic downturn: the number of vacancies posted each day has recently dropped from more than 11,000 to 8,500.
