This high-street giant received a fillip recently when for the third year running a poll of shoppers named its John Lewis and Waitrose subsidiaries as the top two retailers for customer satisfaction. The employee-owned company runs 26 John Lewis department stores and 187 Waitrose supermarkets, and plans to expand both considerably over the next few years. It also owns 24% of the online grocery retailer Ocado. Chairman Charlie Mayfield took over last year, and oversaw sales of £6,052m in the year to January 2008 with record profits of £598m.
