The country’s largest employee owned company is planning to open a 250,000 sq ft department store in Birmingham this year. Its more than 90,000 staff were rewarded with a bonus of 11% in March, equivalent to nearly six weeks’ pay, after increasing sales on a 52-week basis by 5.6% to £9.5bn in its 150th anniversary year. Chairman Sir Charlie Mayfield, 48, leads the group that comprises 43 John Lewis shops and 336 Waitrose branches. Overseas it has plans to open 11 shop-in-shops in stores across the Philippines.
