Founded in 1797, this family-owned firm makes cashmere knitwear at two Scottish mills powered by renewable energy. It sells under its Johnstons of Elgin brand, as well as supplying white-label goods for luxury fashion houses. The company exports to 65 countries, with France and Japan its biggest markets, and international sales rose to £29.9m in 2019. It plans to expand in America and China, where it is aiming to open an office in Shanghai in 2023. Chief executive Simon Cotton, 51, heads the business.
