L Batley

Lawrence Batley, who died aged 91 in 2002, pioneered the concept of cash-and-carry when he opened Britain’s first such warehouse in Huddersfield in 1958. The company now has a chain of 18 depots around Britain that supply 25,000 different products to independent retailers and caterers. The company has also moved into pet food, acquiring two businesses that it has rebranded as Batley’s Pet Products. Sales amounted to an annualised £650m in 2003.
