In September 2001 O’Rourke Group acquired loss-making Laing Construction for a token £1, and the result is seen in the 2003 sales of the newly named Laing O’Rourke. They more than doubled to £1,258m. The company is one of Britain’s largest construction groups and is involved in projects such as Heathrow’s Terminal 5 and the Channel Tunnel Rail Link to London. Founded in 1978 by Ray O’Rourke, Laing O’Rourke operates in most markets, including retail, education, transport, health, aviation and defence.
