This Essex building group was founded by the Irish brothers Ray and Des O’Rourke in 1978 to specialise in designs using precast concrete. Its projects have included the Scottish Parliament building, the Millennium Dome and Portcullis House next to the Palace of Westminster. O’Rourke, which acquired loss-making Laing Construction for a token £1 in September 2001, generated sales of £597m in 2002, when it had 6,197 employees. The O’Rourke family is estimated to be worth £195m.
