Brothers Ray and Des O’Rourke founded this group in 1978. The Essex building company specialises in designs that use pre-cast concrete. Its projects have included the new Scottish Parliament building, the Millennium Dome and Portcullis House next to the Palace of Westminster. The company acquired loss-making Laing Construction for a token £1 in September 2001. The deal included taking over £26m of assets that O’Rourke treats as profits in its latest accounts. The firm’s profits have therefore risen 79% a year from £7.9m in 1999 to £45.2m in 2002.
