Founded by Alan Rayner in 1964, Cumbria-based Lakeland began by selling kitchenware through mail-order catalogues.
Today, under the leadership of Rayner’s three sons – Sam, Martin and Julian – Lakeland has grown to 25 stores across the country. Its profits rose 36% a year from £4.3m in 1998 to £10.8m in 2001.
