Started by Jerry Briant in 1993 with a single shop in Croydon, Surrey, and the goal of making leather furniture affordable to the mass market, Land of Leather has expanded into a chain of 40 showrooms from Inverness to Exeter. Relationships with suppliers in Britain and Italy, and as far afield as China and the Pacific Rim, have allowed the Kent company to source quality products at low cost. By selling its furniture at what it calls ‘honest’ prices, Land of Leather has grown its sales by 197% a year from an annualised £2.8m in 1998 to £72.2m in 2001, when it employed 305 people.
