Trained as a physicist, Andrew Thompson pursued his interest in IT to work on a computerised pay system for a British tobacco company in 1985. The success led him to set up Link HR Systems with his father Norman. The Chester company now develops software and online tools to enable organisations to determine, manage and compare staff pay. It recently provided the NHS with software tools that are used by 600 trusts to help evaluate the pay of 900,000 employees. Introduction of new products, including Market Pricer, which tracks salaries across companies in the same sector, helped to boost sales 92% a year from £1.7m in 2003 to £6.2m in 2005.
