Barrie Phillips had almost 30 years of experience in the recruitment industry when he founded LMR in 1995. The company says it has built its fortunes by giving good customer service at the semi-skilled end of the market. It supplies temporary forklift-truck drivers, electrical workers, order pickers and warehouse operatives. Phillips says he will only fill a job if he has the right candidate, and he is meticulous in taking up references. He wants customers to know they can rely on him. He has weathered the flood of government regulations, including new rules on the minimum wage and holiday pay for temporary workers, to drive up sales 142% a year from £485,000 in 1997 to £6.9m in 2000, when he had 33 staff. LMR began in Bristol but now has offices in Sale, Newcastle, Sunderland and Newton Aycliffe in Co Durham.
