Subscriptions to this online DVD rental company have doubled in the past year thanks in part to a television advertising campaign featuring the voices of Ray Winstone and Bill Nighy. The London company now claims to offer almost 1m subscribers a choice of more than 70,000 films, games and downloads. Led by chief executive Simon Calver and backed by a private-equity consortium that includes Index Ventures and DFJ Esprit, the company acquired Amazon’s British and German DVD rental business early this year. Sales at Lovefilm have soared 239% a year from £1.3m in 2004 to £49.3m in 2007.
