Southhampton-based Lucite International makes materials such as Perspex and resins for paint and adhesives. It operates 16 plants across North America, Europe and Asia, and is opening a factory in Shanghai this year. Until 2000, the company was a division of ICI, the chemicals giant. In 1999, Charterhouse Development Capital bought a majority stake in the company for £505m. Profits at Lucite rose 79% a year from an annualised £12.2m in 2000 to £70.2m in 2003.
