The Mabey Group has 13 subsidiaries that operate in plant hire, steelmaking and construction but it is best known for its modular bridges. The British Army recently purchased 13 Mabey bridges to replace its ageing Bailey bridges. Similar bridges made by a subsidiary, Mabey & Johnson, have been used for emergencies in countries such as Eritrea and Ghana. With 24 locations worldwide, Reading-based Mabey generates sales of £162m. Two-thirds of these come from Asia, and growth in this region has helped to push up profits 65% a year from £9.7m in 1998 to £43.2m in 2001.
