While running a consultancy to help struggling dotcom firms, Jonathan Elliott assisted one of the first price-comparison websites for domestic energy users. This gave him the idea of launching a service for small and medium-sized businesses. London-based Make It Cheaper, launched in 2006, now helps firms compare prices for energy, telecommunications and payment services. Suppliers include the mobile networks and the “big six” energy companies, which pay a commission for custom generated through the company. Its sales grew 79% a year, from £879,000 in 2007 to £5m in 2010.
