Founder Donald Malcolm was 14 when he inherited the family business: its assets were a single truck and a horse and cart used to deliver coal in Johnstone, west of Glasgow. When he died in May 2003 aged 78, he left behind more than 450 trucks, 1,000 trailers, 120 items of heavy plant and over 3million sq ft of warehousing throughout Britain. The logistics company spent 45 years as a listed company but was reacquired by the Malcolm family in May 2005, reaching sales of £191.3m in 2007.
