When CEO David Beardsmore joined Surrey-based building contractor Mansell in 1994, the business was a loss-maker. Beardsmore, who had worked in the US construction industry for some years, took the view that the UK construction industry was excessively price-driven and the contractor-client relationship too antagonistic. He set about trying to implement a more US-style approach at Mansell. While initial charges may be higher, Mansell believes it delivers a quality of product that ensures long-term savings on repair and maintenance. Profits have increased by 64% pa, from £1.1m in 1995 to £5.1m in 1998 with turnover growth of 53% pa in the same period. Mansell won the prestigious Contractor of the Year Award in 1998 sponsored by “Building” magazine and its clients include the Ministry of Defence and the British Airports Authority. In December 1997, it acquired Aberdeen-based construction company Hall & Tawse, turning Mansell into a truly nationwide building contractor with a 1998 turnover of £420.6m
