Appearing for the second consecutive year in the Fast Track 100 league table, Markham Engineering installs air- conditioning systems and associated power supplies in large commercial buildings. In the past year the Hertfordshire company has won a contract from British Airways to build a new training centre at Heathrow. It has also spread its wings on the Continent, building cinemas in Hungary and Poland for the UCI chain and fitting out premises for a dotcom company in Amsterdam. Such lucrative contracts have driven up sales 71% a year, from £1.4m in 1996 to £7m in 1999. The company’s challenge is to find staff in a tight labour market. With a nationwide shortage of engineers holding back growth, Peter McCormack, managing director, says he has made in-house training an important part of the business.
