When BP needs systems for measuring the engine emissions of its oil tankers, it turns to Martek Marine. Founded in 2000 by Michael Pringle and Paul Luen, the company develops safety and environmental monitoring systems for ships. It has grown by anticipating shifts in maritime legislation and developing equipment to ensure compliance. This, coupled with ambitious international expansion, has led to sales growing 121% a year from an annualised £323,000 in 2001 to £3.5m in 2004.
