Martin McColl

At the start of the year it was reported that Sainsbury’s was preparing a bid for TM Group, which operates the Forbuoys, Martins and McColl newsagent chains. The supermarket giant is now thought to have dropped the bid in favour of acquiring certain prime stores in TM’s 1,200 strong network. TM’s private equity owners are reported to be seeking other suitors such as the Co-op for the remaining stores and its distribution subsidiary TM Retail. Sales at Thistledove reached £635m in 2003, when operating profits totalled £19m.
