Essex-based Martin McColl runs a chain of 550 convenience stores, 100 high-street shops and 620 newsagents. In Scotland, the newsagents trade as RS McColl, a reminder of Scottish international footballer Robert Smyth McColl who founded part of the business in 1901. In 2007 the company acquired competitor Smile stores, consolidating its position as the market leader in its sector. Under chairman and chief executive James Lancaster, sales were £771m in 2010.
