Founded in 1853, this construction and civil-engineering business based in Newtownabbey, County Antrim, works for the public and private sectors throughout Britain. Its projects include outlets for Marks & Spencer, J Sainsbury, Tesco and Primark as well as the £114m 12-storey critical-care unit for Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital. Formerly listed on the stock market, McLaughlin & Harvey was taken private in 1993 by Kenneth Cheevers, father of managing director Philip Cheevers. Sales reached £165.3m in 2010.
