This utility contractor recently won a £61m contract from Phoenix Natural Gas to bring gas to 68,000 homes and workplaces in Belfast. It is also building several wind farms across Britain. Pat McNicholas founded the company in 1949, which helped post-war reconstruction, digging holes for cables and pipes. Today McNicholas has more than 50 years’ experience installing and maintaining telecoms, electricity, gas and water networks, and is an established rail contractor. Still owned by the McNicholas family, the company, whose customers include National Grid, BT and Network Rail, had sales of £169.9m in 2007.
