This company has been the beneficiary of an increasingly litigious climate in Britain and the growth in the number of solicitors’ firms offering ‘no win, no fee’ services for personal-injury claims. The company was founded in 1995 by Martin Sanderson, who joined forces with a husband and wife team, Alexander and Madeleine MacLachlan, to provide specialist medical reports to the legal profession. Profiting from a trend towards outsourcing on the part of law firms, Medico-Legal’s sales have grown 144% a year, from £431,000 in 1996 to £6.3m in 1999. Alexander MacLachlan says it was hard work finding and training the right doctors at first, but the company now has 10,000 medical experts it can call on to deal with the 4,000 requests for reports it receives every month. There was also a lot of opposition at first from the law firms themselves because most of the ones that deal with personal-injury claims had their own panels of experts and could not see why they should outsource the work to someone else.
