Memec’s owner, the venture-capital firm Permira, is said to be planning to float the company in New York later this year. Memec distributes semiconductors to mobile-phone and computer makers all over the world, and had sales of £1,050m in 2003, down from a high of £1,427m in 2001. The company’s founder, Dick Skipworth, sold the firm to the German utilities company Eon in 1991, but in 2000 he and the management team bought it back.
