Mercatum’s shareholders briefly gave up ownership of the company when it was bought in June 2002 by MCSI, an American group. Just over a year later MCSI filed for bankruptcy protection and Mercatum was bought back by David White, its managing director. Mercatum is a reseller of computer and audiovisual products, and lists HSBC and Time Warner among its clients. Founded in 1998, the Leeds company claims to be one of only three UK distributors working for Hitachi Dataproducts. Its sales have grown 69% a year from £1.1m in 1999 to £5.4m in 2002, and are expected to double this year.
