While working in his father’s contract cleaning business to pay his tuition, 22 year-old trainee-chef Michael Dawes, spotted a lucrative business: his dad’s. Throwing in his cooking apron, he took over the business his father launched in 1976, and added office refurbishment services. At first, business grew slowly. It has only been in the last few years with the addition of clients such as SBC Warburg and PricewaterhouseCoopers that Miletrian has taken off. The biggest challenge for the Surrey-based family-business, says Dawes, is getting everyone to stop thinking like they still work for a little company. Sales have grown from £5.6m in 1994 to £27.4m in 1997.
