Millgate Homes builds about 100 houses and apartments each year, mostly family homes in small developments in the wealthy commuter belt around Berkshire and Surrey. Graeme Simpson, the founder, sold his car, cashed in his life insurance policies and borrowed money from his father to start the company in 1988. The family-run business has grown steadily in the past decade as the housing market has boomed. Its profits have risen 53% a year from £1.2m in 1999 to £4.4m in 2002.
