The next time you search for a car insurance quote online, you may click on a link created by Mirago. This company has developed web search software that generates links to its clients’ products, triggered by specific search terms. Each time a user clicks on a link, customers, including Linguaphone and Interflora, pay Mirago a commission. Founded by Stephen Holmes, the company also claims to distribute 500m pages of web search results a month to partners such as Infospace. Rolling out into western Europe helped to increase its customer base twenty-fold in three years, boosting sales 199% a year from £408,000 in 2002 to £3.6m in 2004.
