It’s been a difficult year since data communications product manufacturer and supplier Modular Technology appeared at number 95 on last year’s league table. The Oxfordshire-based company has been expanding throughout Europe, focusing on bigger brand names, such as Time and Dell, to increase margins, and reducing its suppliers. Chief executive, Chris Baldock, claims that one one out of four PCs sold in the UK has a Modular Technology component in it and that it is now the leading supplier of modem cards in the UK. It has also just launched its own highly branded cards sold through Dixons. It difficulties arose after trying to beef up the management team. They hired a new financial director and a manufacturing director. The financial director has proved invaluable. The other director, however, was fired after just ten weeks. Chris Baldock says this is because he ordered components in bulk against company policy and left the company with a £2m cash flow problem. With the cash flow issue resolved, sales hit £7.8m in 1997, up from £1.3m in 1994.
