Moto Hospitality claims it is the largest motorway service station operator in Britain, with 100m visitors a year. A consortium led by Macquarie Bank bought the chain from Compass for an estimated £600m in 2006. This has led to a £30m refurbishment programme which has seen M&S Simply Food stores and WH Smith outlets open in many service stations. Chief executive Tim Moss will open the company’s 43rd site near Wetherby, Yorkshire, this year, featuring 100m-deep boreholes for environmentally friendly heating and cooling. Moto reported sales of £786m in 2007.
