Set up in 1897 by Louis Gustave Mouchel to supply steel-reinforced concrete, this engineering consultancy now manages roads, including the M25, bridges and schools for local councils, the Highways Agency and Railtrack. It looks after 32,000km of roads, 7,000 bridges and 3,000 public buildings in Britain. The profits of the Surrey company grew 25% a year from £2.4m in 1998 to £4.7m in 2001, when it had 1,292 staff.
