Five years after staking her savings on opening a healthy, home-style Indian restaurant in Liverpool in 2014, Mowgli’s founder and chief executive Nisha Katona, 48, was appointed an MBE for services to the food industry in January’s new year honours. Initially unable to give up her career as a barrister, she spent days in court and evenings waitressing, cooking or developing recipes. Since then the restaurant chain has launched further sites across the UK, using a £3.5m investment from private equity firm Foresight in 2017 to open in Oxford and Nottingham. Following sales of £12m this year, the company is in the process of negotiating its 19th site.
