When Professor Ray Steele of Southampton University started his research into wireless telephone technology, it was thought to have little future. But Steele, through his telecoms consultancy, Multiple Access Communications, has gone on to help mobile-phone operators build effective networks in urban areas, and is now helping to forge the way for third-generation (3G) phones. Sales have grown 53% a year, from £839,000 in 1998 to £2m in 2000.
