Mark Catlin, a former Essex market trader, says he simply stocks the best-selling music and visual entertainment at 19 stores nationwide, where friendly and efficient staff sell all CDs and videos for £9.99. The company has boosted its sales 98% a year from £1.1m in 1997 to £8.7m in 2000, when it had 70 staff. Catlin keeps prices low by refusing to be tied to a single distributor. ‘I don’t like being beholden to anyone,’ he says. He can often buy CDs more cheaply on the Continent. The recent boom in DVDs has also helped drive up sales as Music Box stores move from VHS tapes to the new discs.
