Paul Ellis, an investment banker, watched wistfully when a number of colleagues became fabulously wealthy after leaving Barclays Bank to found their own technology businesses in the 1980s.
So when the internet had become established, he founded Mutant Technology in 1997 to build financial websites that offered subscribers the chance to access financial information and trade online. The company has spun off two businesses: Credittrade, a credit derivatives trading business, and Secfinex, a financial trading website. Sales have grown 141% a year, from £518,000 in 1998 to £3m in 2000.
