If there isn’t a Nando’s near you now, there may be one soon. This restaurant chain specialises in Portuguese chicken with spicy Peri-Peri sauce, the Mozambiquan name for chilli. Nando’s arrived in Britain from South Africa 11 years ago and now has 72 restaurants nationwide. Sales at the London company have risen 63% a year from £7.8m in 1999 to £34m in 2002. Nando’s is 47% owned by Capricorn Ventures International, an investment vehicle for the South African Enthoven family, which also owns Pizza Express.
