Brothers Jimmy and Doug Edwards, 55 and 60, founded Nationwide Metal Recycling in 2007. It collects, sorts and sells a variety of scrap ferrous and non-ferrous metals and last year it purchased 62,000 tonnes of metal, and scrapped 1,000 cars. Profits more than doubled from £1m in 2016 to £2.4m in 2019, helped by its long-standing relationships with clients such as Biffa, the waste management company, and food brands firm Mizkan. It also has a seven-year contract with Hertfordshire County Council to service its recycling centres and collect its scrap metal, and has rented dock space in Brightlingsea to ship directly to Europe. The company is set to invest in a £3m scrap metal shredder that will enable it to extract greater value from scrap, which it projects will boost profits to £6m in 2021.
