At home with his leg in plaster after a football injury, salesman Paul Caudell got the idea for a business that allows workers to access the company’s computer system from outside the office. In 1994 he teamed up with Lee Hiscott to form Netwise Systems to improve corporate computer networks. The firm, with offices in Surrey and the City, now improves network performance for the likes of UBS Warburg, Reuters and the London Stock Exchange. Its sales have risen 108% a year from £828,000 in 1997 to £7.4m in 2000, when the company had 12 full-time staff.
