Frustrated by working for others, Andrew Gilbert founded Node4 at the age of 23. The Derby company began by developing software for internet telephony, but in 2007 its data hosting business started to take off. It now has data centres in Derby, Wakefield and Northampton and is building another in Birmingham to add more capacity. Among the company’s 750 customers are local authorities and businesses in the financial sector that must have access to data at all times. Sales have increased 42% a year from £3m in 2008 to £8.8m in 2011 as cloud computing becomes more popular.
