Focusing on a niche market has driven rapid growth at Nomad Digital, which was set up in 2002 by Nigel Wallbridge and Graeme Lowdon as a wireless network provider for trains. The company has since branched out into monitoring equipment—for train doors and airconditioning, for example. Its customers include Dubai Metro and Heathrow Express, but its biggest market is the Netherlands, where it serves the dominant rail operator Nederlandse Spoorwegen. Backed by Amadeus Capital Partners and others, Nomad has grown sales 126% a year from an annualised £751,000 in 2007 to £8.6m in 2010, when it made a pre-tax loss of £2.3m.
