Owned by Richard Desmond, this company publishes the Express newspapers, the Daily and Sunday Star, OK! magazine and a series of top-shelf magazines. The London company also runs the adult- entertainment channel Fantasy TV. Desmond paid £125m for Express newspapers in 2000, and has since increased circulation and turned a profit by cutting staff and focusing on celebrity news. Northern & Shell’s sales increased by more than 88% a year from £52m in 1999 to £348m in 2002, primarily as a result of the Express newspapers acquisition.
