Richard Desmond’s Northern & Shell Network started in 1974 with a music magazine, but now publishes well-known titles like the celebrity magazine OK! Now established in America, Australia and Britain, OK! is also published under licence in 12 other countries, leading Desmond to buy an £18m jet to oversee them. The group owns four national newspapers, as well as holding 50% stakes in two in Ireland. It says it now distributes 2m newspapers a day and 2m magazines a week. Group sales reached £441.3m in 2007, excluding joint ventures.
