In the 32 years since Richard Desmond founded Northern & Shell, the company he still owns has grown from a tiny producer of niche adult magazines to become a large publisher whose titles include the Express newspapers, the Daily Star, OK! magazine and others. Desmond, who paid £125m for the Express in 2000, increased their coverage of celebrity news and gossip, and in late 2005 launched the American version of OK! magazine together with 10 other overseas editions. The London publisher had sales of £413m in 2005.
