OK! magazine held a lavish 20th anniversary party in April, signalling its celebrity status at the heart of Richard Desmond’s media empire, which includes Channel 5 and the Daily Express. Desmond, 61, who began his company in 1974 with a music magazine, has also invested in the digital TV service YouView, which saw the departure of Lord Sugar as chairman earlier this year. The company reported sales of £689m in 2011, over half of which were generated by Channel 5’s Big Brother reality TV series.
