Michael Knox set up North Sea Cables in Aberdeen in 1982 after spotting a gap in the market for the provision of specialist cabling to the offshore oil and gas sectors. He established the company with just four employees and £20,000 worth of stock. In 1989 he expanded from his UK base to open an office in Norway, with subsidiaries following in the USA, Holland, Singapore, Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates. 40% of the company’s sales are now derived from non-European markets. Trading as Noskab Group since 1994, the company manages all aspects of cable supply, from initial specifications and drawings to delivery and storage. Profits have increased by 60% pa, from £773,000 in 1996 to £3.2m in 1999, with sales rising 19% pa in the same period to reach £35.9m.
